OLIO is an app that connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses, and each other so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. Can also be used for non-food household items too.
What is our Staple food, where does it come from? Can and should we sustain this supply? What could we switch to & our local farmers start growing in UK? One company addressing these questions is Hodmedod’s British Pulses and Grains
They are encouraging farmers to grow, peas, beans and quinoa.Nationally we need to grow more legumes which are a rich source of vegetable protein if we are to cut down on meat and dairy consumption. Quinoa has become very popular and because it is now exported as a cash crop from South America, the farmers and locals villagers often end up eating a nutritionally inferior imported white rice and this is now causing malnutrition in children in Peru and Bolivia.

People’s Food Policy
Sets out a food system where everybody, regardless of income, status or background, has secure access to enough good food at all times, without compromising on the wellbeing of people, the health of the environment and ability of future generations to provide for themselves. Food sovereignty is defined by La Via Campesina, the biggest international farmer led union in the world, as ‘the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sounds and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. Food sovereignty puts those who produce, distribute and eat food at the heart of food systems and policies rather than the demands of markets and corporations’. People’s Food Policy PDF
